In a nail-biting encounter, Pakistan U19 managed to edge past Ireland U19 by three wickets in their first fixture of the Super Six stage at Potchefstroom. Despite a shaky start in the chase of 182, Ahmad Hassan’s composed unbeaten half-century ensured Pakistan U19 secured a crucial win.
Opting to bat first, Ireland U19 found themselves in early trouble as Pakistan’s bowlers struck at regular intervals. Ubaid Shah and Ali Raza inflicted early damage, claiming three wickets between them, while Ahmad Hassan also made significant contributions with the ball, picking up two crucial wickets. John McNally’s resilient half-century was the highlight of Ireland’s innings as they managed to post 181 runs before being bowled out in 48.4 overs.
Chasing a modest target, Pakistan U19 faced early setbacks, losing key wickets at regular intervals. However, Ahmad Hassan showcased great resilience and determination with the bat, anchoring the innings with a crucial unbeaten fifty. Supported by valuable contributions from Haroon Arshad and Saad Baig, Ahmad guided Pakistan U19 towards the target.
Despite a late scare, with wickets falling at the other end, Ahmad held his nerve and steered Pakistan U19 to victory with an unbeaten knock of 57 runs off 72 balls. His mature innings under pressure earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award.
For Ireland U19, Harry Dyer was the standout performer with the ball, scalping four crucial wickets to keep his team in the hunt.
With this win, Pakistan U19 will carry forward their momentum as they prepare to face Bangladesh U19 in their second Super Six fixture on 3 February at Benoni.
