Bandhay Ek Dour Se Teaches how Too Much of Anything can be Destructive

It’s not often that a drama is so reflective of its title. The characters of “Bandhay Ek Dour Se” are literally for whatever reason, tied together. Their fates are intertwined even though, things could have been much different.

This drama by 7th Sky Entertainment revolves around three main characters. The story of Maheen, Umar and Roshni is a story of sacrifice and manipulation. Maheen was once the person who used to be the go-to between Umar and Roshni. Despite everything she knew about Roshni, she tried to protect her. Even when it was obvious that she was set to break Umar’s heart, she tried to shield both her friends. It was also clear from the start that Maheen had affection for Umar, but she was always a better friend. That equation somehow continued even after Umar and Maheen got married. At times a person self-destructs, in trying to be a good friend. That seems to be Maheen’s problem.

On the flipside there is Roshni. She has always been honest about her intentions. Even if they can be classified as selfish. Unable to see her flaws, she always puts blames on someone else. If things go wrong, Roshni is always the victim in her eyes. Maheen is the perfect scapegoat in her eyes.

Then there is Umar – the poor old naïve soul. What will it take for Umar to realise what is going on here? He keeps repeating the same mistakes and refuses to see the reality. He had set a goal so very long ago, and is unable to think beyond it. In doing so, he is not only hurting himself but Maheen and his family.

Each of these characters are flawed. As a viewer, you can feel a sense of frustration with their actions. When will Maheen realise the fact that at some point in her life, she should think of what is good for her? When will Umar get over the spell of Roshni? And when will Roshni think of how her actions affect the lives of her family and friends?

Like most Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi dramas, there is a deeper meaning and message for the audience in Bandhay Ek Dour Se. Too much of anything can be destructive, even if its sacrifice for your loved ones.
