Bangladesh Claims Historic First Victory Over Pakistan in Test Cricket

In a historic achievement, Bangladesh recorded their first-ever victory over Pakistan in Test cricket, clinching the first Test by 10 wickets at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This monumental win came in their 14th attempt and marked the 20th overall Test match victory for Bangladesh.

On the final day of the Test, Pakistan, who were trailing by 117 runs from the first innings, began the day needing 94 runs to avoid defeat. However, they faltered significantly, collapsing to 108 for 6 at lunch before being bowled out for 146 just 93 minutes into the second session.

Bangladesh successfully chased down the modest target of 30 runs without losing a wicket, burying the memories of their near miss against Pakistan 21 years ago when they lost by just one wicket in Multan. In total, Pakistan had previously won 12 Tests against Bangladesh, including six victories by an innings and one by a hefty margin of 328 runs.

Match Highlights:

  • Pakistan declared their first innings at a solid 448 for 6, but this total would become their second-highest first innings score in a losing cause. Their highest in such a scenario remains 574 against Australia in 1972.
  • Bangladesh responded with a formidable 565 runs, led by Mushfiqur Rahim’s remarkable innings of 191, earning him the Player of the Match accolade. The innings also featured contributions from Shadman Islam (93), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77), Litton Das (56), and Mominul Haque (50).
  • On the final day, Pakistan’s batting woes continued as they lost wickets rapidly. Mohammad Rizwan was the only bright spot in the second innings, scoring 51 runs. The team crumbled under pressure, losing their last six wickets for just 28 runs.
  • The spin duo of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4-21) and Shakib Al Hasan (3-44) were instrumental in dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup, while the pace attack of Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud also contributed with early breakthroughs.
