In a thrilling contest at the Asian Games 2023, the Nigar Sultana-led Bangladesh Women’s cricket team secured the bronze medal by defeating Pakistan Women in a gripping encounter. The Bangladeshi side, after winning the toss, chose to field first, inviting Pakistan to bat.
The star of the show for the Bangladeshi Women was Shorna Akter, who displayed exceptional bowling skills. She finished her four-over spell with impressive figures of 3/16. Shorna received valuable support from other bowlers like Sanjida Akter Meghla (2/11), Marufa Akter, and Nahida. Together, they managed to restrict Pakistan to a total of just 64/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
With a modest target to chase, the Bangladeshi Women’s team showed determination and teamwork. They reached the target in 18.2 overs with five wickets in hand, thanks to crucial contributions from Shamima Sultana (13), Shathi Rani (13), and Shorna Akter (14).
This victory is significant for Bangladesh as it marks only the second time they have beaten Pakistan in women’s cricket. It’s a moment of pride and achievement for the Bangladesh Women’s cricket team.
Reflecting on Bangladesh’s journey in the Asian Games 2023, they advanced to the semifinals based on their T20I ICC Rankings. However, they missed the opportunity to play against Hong Kong in the quarterfinal due to a complete washout. In the semifinal, they faced India Women and suffered an eight-wicket defeat on September 24 at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field.
On the other hand, Pakistan Women also reached the semifinals due to their ranking as their match against Indonesia Women was abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to rain. In the semifinal clash, they faced Sri Lanka Women and faced a six-wicket loss.
As the women’s cricket event at the Asian Games 2023 comes to a close, all eyes are now on the gold medal match. India Women, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, are set to make their maiden appearance in the final and will compete against Sri Lanka Women. The final showdown will take place at 11:30 am IST at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou today, with India Women aiming to clinch the gold medal in this prestigious quadrennial event.
