The highly anticipated inaugural Champions One-Day Cup is all set to kick off in Faisalabad on 12 September, with the opening match between Wolves and Panthers. With just three days to go, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi visited Faisalabad to review the arrangements and met with the mentors of the five competing teams.
The meeting included Wolves mentor Misbah-ul-Haq, Stallions mentor Shoaib Malik, Lions mentor Waqar Younis, Dolphins mentor Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Panthers mentor Saqlain Mushtaq. During the consultation, the mentors highlighted the importance of the Champions Cup for domestic cricket and discussed potential improvements for the pitches and conditions at Iqbal Stadium.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi assured the mentors that efforts would be made to improve the standards of the pitches and grounds, ensuring that players are given equal opportunities for practice. He issued directives to the Director of Domestic Cricket and Director of High Performance to oversee the arrangements. Naqvi also stressed that all players would have access to top-notch gym facilities to focus on their fitness.
Chairman Naqvi expressed his vision of establishing the Champions Cup as a major brand in Pakistan cricket, stating that the tournament would be crucial for identifying new talent and preparing backup players for the national team across all formats. He emphasized the significant role that team mentors would play in achieving this goal.
PCB officials, including Advisor Bilal Afzal, Director Domestic, Director High Performance, Director International Cricket, Director PSL, and the Senior General Manager of Domestic Cricket, were also present during the visit.
The Champions One-Day Cup promises to bring fresh talent to the forefront of Pakistan’s cricket scene, with five teams competing in a high-stakes tournament aimed at boosting the quality of domestic cricket.
