The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been a breeding ground for top-quality fast bowlers since its creation in 2016. Four of the top five leading wicket-takers in the tournament’s history are fast bowlers, showcasing the depth and strength of Pakistan’s pace bowling arsenal.
A number of talented fast bowlers, such as Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shahnawaz Dahani, have made their mark on the international stage thanks to their performances in the PSL.
In a sit-down interview Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Wasim, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Wahab Riaz discussed their approach to success in T20 cricket, their bowling strategies, and the impact of the PSL on Pakistan’s fast bowling landscape.
Mohammed Amir of the Karachi Kings, who was the first player to take a hat-trick in the PSL, discussed how the pitch conditions determine his approach as a bowler. He said that as a new-ball bowler, his role is to take early wickets in the Powerplay, but when defending a target, he focuses on creating pressure by bowling dot deliveries.
Mohammed Wasim Jnr of the Islamabad United emphasized the importance of fitness and practice in becoming a successful fast bowler. He said that while his primary goal when bowling in the first innings is to dismiss the batters early, in the second innings he adopts a more defensive approach.
Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi praised the high standards of fast bowling in the PSL and credited it to the healthy competition among fast bowlers. He said that all fast bowlers in the league constantly push each other to improve, which is a positive sign for the future of Pakistan cricket.
Wahab Riaz of the Peshawar Zalmi, who is the only bowler to reach the 100-wicket landmark in the PSL, spoke about the importance of knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses as a bowler. He advised keeping things simple in T20 cricket and trusting the process while not forgetting the basics.
