Pakistan women’s cricket is poised for an exciting new chapter as former international cricketer Nahida Khan steps into the role of manager for the upcoming South Africa women’s series. The highly anticipated series is set to kick off in Karachi on September 1, marking a significant moment for women’s cricket in the nation.
A seasoned veteran of the game, 36-year-old Nahida Khan brings a wealth of experience to her new position. Having represented Pakistan in an impressive 120 matches, Nahida boasts a remarkable record of 2,014 runs and a wicket to her name. Her retirement from international cricket in June this year marked the end of a glorious playing career and the beginning of a promising new journey in team management.
Nahida’s transition into coaching was already on display during her brief stint as the assistant coach of the Blasters in the Pakistan Cup Women’s Cricket Tournament held earlier this year in Karachi. Her strategic insights and leadership qualities shone through as she contributed to the team’s performance during the tournament, demonstrating her potential as a future leader in the cricketing world.
Notably, Nahida was also part of the coaching staff for the Women’s League exhibition matches, where she played a key role in guiding Taufiq Umar’s Amazons to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Super Women in March. Her experience on and off the field makes her a strong contender to inspire and guide the Pakistan women’s team to new heights in the upcoming series.
Joining Nahida Khan in the team management lineup is another former international cricketer, Kamran Hussain, who will take over the role of bowling coach, succeeding Saleem Jaffar. Hussain’s expertise and experience are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s bowling attack and strategies for the series.
In a strategic move to ensure seamless team leadership, Mauhtashim Rashid has been named the interim head coach for the national side during the South Africa series and the Asian Games. This decision comes in the wake of Mark Coles’ resignation from the post of head coach last week. Rashid’s familiarity with the team and his previous role as head coach make him a natural fit to lead the team forward.
The player support personnel also includes prominent figures in the cricketing world such as Taufiq Umar, who will continue to serve as the batting coach, and Muhammad Asfand Yar, the strength and conditioning coach. Zubair Ahmed will contribute his analytical expertise as the team’s analyst, while Rifat Asghar Gill will ensure the players’ physical well-being as the physiotherapist. Syed Nazir Ahmed will handle the crucial role of media manager, facilitating communication between the team and fans.
With Nahida Khan at the helm and a dynamic team of coaches and support staff, the Pakistan women’s cricket team is gearing up for an exciting series against South Africa. Cricket enthusiasts and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the matches, anticipating a display of skill, determination, and teamwork from the talented squad under the guidance of their new manager and coaching staff.
