Saeed Ahmed, the former Pakistan cricket captain and distinguished cricketer, has passed away in Lahore at the age of 86 after a brief illness. His demise marks the end of an era in Pakistan cricket, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and contributions to the sport.
Saeed Ahmed’s cricketing journey spanned over 41 Test matches between 1958 and 1973, during which he showcased exceptional talent both with the bat and ball. Notably, he briefly captained the Pakistan side, leading them in three drawn Test matches against England in 1969.
Born in Jalandhar, British India (now part of Indian Punjab) in 1937, Saeed made his debut at the age of 20 against West Indies in a memorable drawn Test in Bridgetown. Throughout his illustrious career, he amassed a total of 2,991 Test runs, including five centuries, with three of them against arch-rivals India. Additionally, his off-spin bowling prowess saw him claim 22 Test wickets.
Known for his elegant strokeplay and effortless driving ability, Saeed quickly established himself as a mainstay in the Pakistan side. However, his career faced an unfortunate end after a dispute with Dennis Lillee during Pakistan’s 1972 tour of Australia, resulting in his premature departure from international cricket.
Expressing condolences over Saeed Ahmed’s passing, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi remarked, “The PCB is saddened over the demise of one of our former Test captains and expresses deep condolences to the family of Saeed Ahmed. He served Pakistan with all his heart, and the PCB honors his record and services for the Test team.”
Following his retirement, Saeed distanced himself from the cricketing world, leading a reclusive life in Lahore. Despite his withdrawal from the sport, his contributions remain etched in the annals of Pakistan cricket history, inspiring generations of cricketers.
Saeed Ahmed is survived by two sons, a daughter, and his half-brother Younis Ahmed, who also represented Pakistan in Test cricket.
The passing of Saeed Ahmed leaves a void in the cricketing community, as fans and colleagues alike mourn the loss of a true cricketing legend. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers in Pakistan and beyond.
