Gaddafi Stadium Lahore is poised to undergo comprehensive renovations aimed at aligning its facilities with the standards of Dubai’s cricket stadium. This ambitious initiative, undertaken by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), seeks to enhance the spectator experience and upgrade the infrastructure in preparation for Pakistan’s hosting of the Champions Trophy early next year.
As part of a broader strategy, the PCB has outlined plans to refurbish three major cricket venues: Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, National Stadium in Karachi, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. A foreign consultancy firm has already submitted design proposals for these extensive renovations. During a recent high-level meeting in Lahore, detailed deliberations took place regarding the future enhancements at Gaddafi Stadium. The key focus is on remodeling the venue to ensure an unobstructed view for spectators, emulating the viewing experience at Dubai Cricket Stadium.
One of the primary modifications includes relocating the hospitality boxes closer to the playing field. Currently positioned too far from the action, these boxes will be moved to enhance the viewing experience for premium ticket holders. Additionally, there is a plan to expand the seating capacity in the Imran Khan and Fazal Mahmood enclosures, thereby accommodating a larger number of cricket enthusiasts. The proposed installation of a large screen, subject to its availability, is also part of the enhancements aimed at elevating the match-day atmosphere.
A significant aspect of the renovation involves the main building of the stadium. The existing rooms used by PCB board directors will be demolished and relocated to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or the Cricket House. This strategic move is intended to optimize space usage within the stadium, thereby providing improved facilities for spectators.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has underscored the importance of upgrading spectator amenities and ensuring unobstructed views of the matches. Currently in England to observe the fourth T20 International, Naqvi has indicated the possibility of traveling to the USA to watch World Cup matches. Upon his return, discussions will continue regarding the upgrades for the Karachi and Rawalpindi stadiums.
This renovation project reflects the PCB’s commitment to enhancing the cricketing infrastructure in Pakistan, ensuring that facilities meet international standards and provide an exceptional experience for both players and spectators. The completion of these upgrades is expected to significantly bolster Pakistan’s capability to host major international cricketing events, starting with the Champions Trophy.
