Global Chess League: Triveni Continental Kings Qualify for Finals with Dominating Win over Ganges Grandmasters

Triveni Continental Kings have emerged as the first team to qualify for the finals of the inaugural edition of the Global Chess League. With an impressive four-match winning streak, including a dominant performance against tournament favorites Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings have solidified their place in the highly anticipated final showdown.

In a crucial match against Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings showcased their determination and skill. While Ganges needed only a draw to secure their position in the round-robin, Triveni had to secure a win to keep their hopes alive. Former World Champion Viswanathan Anand displayed his strategic prowess as he secured a draw against Levon Aronian, ensuring a crucial half point for Triveni. Sara Khadem delivered a stunning victory for Triveni, defeating Bella Khotenashvili in a sharp game. Wei Yi added to Triveni’s triumph with a victory against Leinier Dominguez. Despite a strong performance from Kateryna Lagno, who managed to secure a draw against Hou Yifan, Triveni remained on the edge of a historic win.

A twist in the game saw Yu Yangyi of Triveni succumbing to defeat against Rapport, but Triveni’s Jonas Bjerre ensured the team’s victory by defeating Esipenko. The final score stood at 11:6 in favor of Triveni Continental Kings, leaving Ganges Grandmasters with a crushing loss.

Triveni Continental Kings’ remarkable turnaround in the tournament is worth applauding. Despite initial struggles and the need to replace a player, the team has now secured the top spot on the scoreboard with 18 match points, making them the first team to qualify for the finals. Levon Aronian, the team’s icon player, expressed their comeback spirit, stating, “We came back from the dead. We were just focused and playing for a win.”

The team also credited Sara Khadem, who joined the team as a replacement, for her significant contribution to the team’s morale and success. Team manager Loek van Wely expressed pride in the team’s performance and acknowledged the psychological advantage they held over Ganges. He also acknowledged the upcoming challenge in the finals and stated, “In the finals, it’s anybody’s game, so we will prepare accordingly.”

In the other match of the day, SG Alpine Warriors faced a defeat against Chingari Gulf Titans, putting their qualification for the finals in jeopardy. The race for the second place in the finals remains open, adding to the excitement and anticipation of the Global Chess League.
