In a rain-affected semi-final clash at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) secured their spot in the final of the President’s Cup Grade-I 2023-24 tournament. Despite the interruption from the weather, HEC’s qualification was confirmed based on their stellar performance in the round-robin stage, edging past Ghani Glass.
Electing to bowl first, HEC faced a daunting challenge as the Ghani Glass batsmen, led by Sharjeel Khan and Tayyab Tahir, launched a blistering assault. The pair orchestrated a formidable 148-run partnership for the second wicket, setting a formidable foundation for their team. Sharjeel’s explosive innings, highlighted by twelve boundaries and six maximums, propelled Ghani Glass to a commanding total. Supported by Tahir’s gritty century, Ghani Glass posted an imposing 392-8 in their allotted 50 overs.
In response, HEC began their chase confidently, with Mohammad Huraira leading the charge with an unbeaten 44. However, rain intervened, halting play with HEC at 115-1 in 17.3 overs, well ahead of the required run rate. Despite their strong position, the match concluded with no result, sending HEC through to the final based on their superior performance earlier in the tournament.
HEC’s bowlers, including Waseem Akram and Shahid Aziz, displayed resilience in the face of Ghani Glass’ onslaught, claiming crucial wickets to contain the opposition’s scoring. Despite the interruption, HEC’s dominant display throughout the tournament earned them a deserved spot in the final showdown.
With their eyes set on the championship title, HEC will now prepare to face Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in the highly anticipated final clash scheduled for May 12 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. As the excitement builds for the final showdown, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to witness the thrilling contest between these two formidable teams.
