Home series against Sri Lanka is an opportunity to regain confidence: Diana Baig

Pakistan women’s team fast bowler Diana Baig believes that the home series against Sri Lanka is an opportunity for the team to regain its confidence after a dismal performance at the Women’s World Cup 2022 in New Zealand.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Diana said: “Our performance was not good. Obviously, when you lose, you are disheartened, but we have a new opportunity now, so we are trying to let those things go, and our focus is to gain our confidence back by winning this home series.”

Pakistan women and Sri Lanka women will play three ODIs and as many T20Is from May 24 here at Southend Club.

The right-arm pacer added that the team’s main focus and goal is to win the series and start the season with a win as the past year didn’t go as expected.

Talking about the preparations for the series, she said that the weather is extremely hot, but they are utilising the time to adapt to the scorching heat.

“Preparations are going good so far. The weather is sizzling, but we are trying to stay hydrated, keep our practice going and utilise this time before the series.”

Diana, along with a few other members of the Pakistan women’s team, participated in the Fairbreak Invitational 2022 in Dubai, and talking about her experience, the 26-year-old said that there is not much gap between Pakistani and foreign cricketers.

“I interacted with top fast bowlers at the tournament and asked them about their plan during the initial and final stages of the match, and I think there isn’t much gap. Pakistan’s young pacer Fatima Sana is considered one of the top fast bowlers in the world. Yes, their experience and exposure are vast as they participate in different leagues,” Diana said.

“Personally, it was a great experience for me, and there were players from different countries, so I had the opportunity to experience cultural diversity. The environment was calm, and we learned a lot from them. And, overall, it was an amazing experience,” she signed off.

Pakistan women will take on Sri Lanka women in the opening T20 match of the series at the Southend Club on 24 May.
