Karachi bid farewell to one of its legendary actors, Yousuf Kamal, popularly known as Shakeel, as funeral prayers were offered on Friday at the Sultan Mosque. The esteemed actor, famous for his remarkable performances in television and film, passed away at the age of 85, leaving behind an indelible mark on Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
The funeral ceremony was attended by prominent figures from the industry, including Sindh Governor Kamran Tesori and actors Faisal Qureshi, Behroze Sabzwari, Shehzad Raza, and Aftab Alam, among others. Speaking to the media after the funeral prayers, Governor Tesori expressed his disappointment at the lack of recognition and respect Shakeel received during his lifetime. He emphasized the need for people to appreciate and honor artists while they are still alive, citing examples from neighboring countries that shower their stars with appreciation.
Shakeel’s illustrious career spanned over 60 years, during which he made significant contributions to radio, theatre, and films. He enchanted audiences with his captivating presence and exceptional acting skills in popular projects such as “Aangan Terha,” “Shehzori,” “Afshaan,” and “Ankahi.” Known for his charming personality, superb acting prowess, and eloquence, Shakeel primarily portrayed positive characters, endearing himself to viewers across generations.
The news of Shakeel’s passing deeply saddened friends, fans, and fellow actors. Actor Khaled Anam paid tribute to the late artist on Instagram, proclaiming that Shakeel would forever remain in their hearts as the brightest star in heaven. The industry mourns the loss of a true legend, while fans cherish the memories he created through his art.
Although Shakeel had retired from the television screen in recent years, his talent continued to shine through in his last notable serial, “Mere Humdam Mere Dost.” The veteran actor occasionally made appearances on television shows, delighting his fans and proving that his passion for acting remained unwavering.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb also expressed sadness at the loss of Shakeel, recognizing his significant contributions to both film and television. She highlighted his unforgettable roles in dramas such as “Uncle Arfi,” “Ankahi,” and “Aangan Terha,” emphasizing that Shakeel’s death is a tremendous loss to the world of arts.
As Shakeel finds his final resting place in Karachi’s Defence graveyard, his legacy lives on through the memories he created and the inspiration he provided to generations of actors and artists.
