Inzamam-ul-Haq, a member of the victorious 1992 World Cup-winning squad and former Pakistan captain, has been appointed as the chief selector of Pakistan’s national men’s selection committee. The committee, comprising individuals such as Mickey Arthur (team director), Grant Bradburn (head coach), and Hasan Cheema (secretary), is entrusted with the task of selecting the senior men’s cricket team as well as the Pakistan Shaheens squad.
With this new role, Inzamam steps down from the Cricket Technical Committee, and his successor will be announced soon. His immediate focus lies on selecting the national men’s squad for the forthcoming three-match One-Day International series against Afghanistan scheduled from 22 to 26 August in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, he will oversee the selection process for the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023, set to begin on 30 August in Multan.
This marks Inzamam’s second stint as the chief selector, having previously held the position from August 2016 to July 2019. Under his guidance, Pakistan secured their first ICC Champions Trophy title in June 2017, clinching victory over India in the final by an impressive margin of 180 runs at The Oval in London.
Expressing his gratitude, Inzamam stated, “It is an honor for me to be appointed as the chairperson of the national men’s selection committee. I had a good run in the last tenure, and I am eager to work in this role once again. Despite the challenges ahead, I am confident in delivering positive outcomes.”
Zaka Ashraf, Head of the PCB Management Committee, lauded Inzamam’s contribution to the game and expressed confidence in his ability to identify and nurture emerging talent. “Inzamam’s previous tenure brought us success and unearthed outstanding talent. His new innings will undoubtedly add to our achievements and bring more talented cricketers into the limelight.”
Inzamam’s appointment comes at a crucial juncture, with the ACC Men’s Asia Cup and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on the horizon, followed by a tour of Australia. As Pakistan prepares to face formidable challenges, Inzamam’s experience and insight are anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping a competitive and capable cricketing squad.
