The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Aqib Javed as the interim red-ball head coach following Jason Gillespie’s sudden resignation, reportedly due to dissatisfaction with his role. Aqib, a member of the men’s selection committee, will lead the team in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, starting December 26 in Centurion.
While the PCB has not officially commented on Gillespie’s reasons for stepping down, reports suggest ongoing discontent with his lack of involvement in key decisions. Gillespie had taken over the role in April, succeeding Gary Kirsten, who also resigned citing similar concerns.
Aqib, who temporarily served as the white-ball head coach last month, now assumes responsibility for both formats during Pakistan’s ongoing tour of South Africa. The second Test of the series will be held from January 3-7 in Cape Town.
This marks a turbulent year for Pakistan’s coaching setup, with frequent changes and resignations amid reported dissatisfaction over team management and selection processes.
