Lahore Qalandars has officially announced the appointment of former England fast bowler and ex-Managing Director of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Darren Gough, as the team’s head coach for the inaugural Global Super League (GSL), which kicks off on November 26 in Guyana. Gough, 54, will bring his extensive experience in international cricket, coaching, and administration to the Qalandars, aiming to lead them to victory in this historic season.
Gough, known for his impactful bowling and leadership qualities, retired as England’s leading ODI wicket-taker and has since transitioned to roles as a commentator, bowling consultant, and cricket administrator. His tenure at Yorkshire as Managing Director was marked by his dedication to player development and cricket management.
Expressing his excitement, Gough said, “It’s an absolute honor to join Lahore Qalandars as head coach for the upcoming Global Super League. Having worked with Qalandars on their PDP program, I know the team’s commitment to nurturing young talent. I look forward to guiding these players and making Pakistan cricket proud.”
Lahore Qalandars’ owner Sameen Rana expressed his confidence in Gough’s leadership, saying, “Darren’s legacy, both as a player and a leader, makes him an invaluable addition to our team. His experience aligns perfectly with our focus on player development, and we’re thrilled to have him lead us in this new venture.”
The Qalandars’ journey in the GSL begins with an opening match against Guyana Amazon Warriors on November 26. The league features five teams, including Hampshire Hawks, Rangpur Riders, and Victoria from Australia, competing in a round-robin format. The top two teams will clash in the final on December 7.
