In the world of cricket, where dreams are built on grit, sweat, and unrelenting dedication, Mir Hamza stands as a beacon of perseverance. The left-arm fast bowler, known for his sharp swing and unyielding spirit, believes that representing Pakistan is the ultimate honor—a privilege that demands nothing short of excellence, every single time.
“Performing consistently is crucial if you want to represent your country,” says Hamza, his voice carrying the weight of experience. “There’s nothing greater than representing Pakistan, and for that, you must be prepared to prove yourself over and over again.”
Hamza’s journey has been anything but smooth. Despite his undeniable talent, it took him time and relentless effort to position himself among Pakistan’s top bowlers. “I’ve been working tirelessly to get closer to the top bowlers in the country. I wanted to ensure that when a spot opened up in the national team, I would be the one to fill it. It took a lot of time, but I kept pushing,” Hamza reflects.
One of the standout moments in Hamza’s career was during Pakistan’s tour of Australia, where he delivered a memorable performance in the Melbourne Test. Sharing the ball with the formidable Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hamza recalls the experience with pride. “Bowling alongside Shaheen was incredible. He was always encouraging me, telling me to keep doing what I was doing and to take wickets. Partnerships like that are crucial—they benefit the team immensely.”
During that Melbourne Test, Hamza’s determination was evident. With Shaheen striking early, Hamza knew he had to step up. “When Shaheen took those early wickets, I was focused on doing the same. And when I got two wickets in a single over, I turned to him and said, ‘We need to win this Test from here.’ Unfortunately, we didn’t win, but as a bowling unit, our performance was outstanding.”
The tour, however, was not without its challenges. Hamza admits that the absence of Naseem Shah was deeply felt. “We missed Naseem. If he had been with us, the outcome might have been different.”
Preparation was key for Hamza ahead of the grueling Australian tour. “I was told that Australian players would try to outlast us with their superior fitness. The grounds there are soft and large, so I worked extensively on my fitness. I put myself under extra pressure in domestic matches to build my mental and physical strength,” he explains.
The road back to the Test team hasn’t been easy for Hamza, but he sees it as a necessary journey. “Making a comeback to the Test team is never easy, as I’ve experienced. However, playing consistent domestic cricket has been extremely beneficial. It builds mental resilience and patience, and it helps in grooming your personality, which is crucial at the highest level.”
Hamza emphasizes the importance of fitness, not just from a cricketing perspective but as a lifestyle choice. “Fitness is often viewed only through the lens of cricket, but it’s linked to your entire lifestyle. You have to pay attention to your diet and daily routine. If we look at international stars, we see how they maintain their lifestyle.”
As Pakistan prepares for a busy cricket season, Hamza is acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. “The conditions in Pakistan are different from Australia—our pitches don’t have as much bounce. But we’ve been playing on these home grounds for years, so there shouldn’t be any issues. However, with the number of matches this season, it’s crucial to stay on top of our fitness.”
Mir Hamza’s journey is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence. His story serves as an inspiration to all young cricketers, a reminder that with hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the game, the dream of representing Pakistan is within reach. As he continues to hone his craft, Hamza remains focused on his ultimate goal—making his country proud on the world stage.
