Mohammad Amir Reverses International Retirement, Available for T20 World Cup

On Sunday, fast bowler Mohammad Amir announced his reconsideration of international retirement and declared his availability for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence in June. Amir cited “few positive” discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the reason behind his decision to return to the national team fold.

Amir, a veteran of the sport, had initially retired from international cricket in 2020, expressing dissatisfaction with the treatment he received from the PCB management. His decision was influenced by past controversies, particularly the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, which led to his ban from cricket for five years after pleading guilty to the charges.

The recent exclusion from the 35-member squad for the New Zealand tour served as a “wake-up call” for Amir, prompting him to reconsider his retirement. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had previously hinted at the board’s involvement in deciding Amir’s future, pointing to examples like Mohammad Yousuf and Wahab Riaz.

In a statement shared on social media, Amir revealed that after discussions with his family and close associates, he felt compelled to serve his country once again. He expressed his eagerness to prioritize the national team over personal considerations, emphasizing his deep-rooted aspiration to represent Pakistan.

Amir’s decision to come out of retirement coincides with a similar move by all-rounder Imad Wasim, who recently reversed his retirement decision to make himself available for the T20 World Cup.

The ICC T20 World Cup is set to take place in the United States and the West Indies in June, offering Amir an opportunity to contribute to Pakistan’s campaign in the prestigious tournament.

Having represented Pakistan across all formats, Amir brings valuable experience to the team, with 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 50 T20Is under his belt. His return adds depth and expertise to Pakistan’s bowling attack as they gear up for the challenges ahead.
