The national selection committee, led by Wahab Riaz, has officially sanctioned Mohammad Nawaz as the substitute for left-arm spinner Noman Ali for the ongoing Test series against Australia. Noman Ali’s exclusion from the Test series followed his diagnosis of acute appendicitis, resulting in his immediate surgery.
The 29-year-old left-arm spinner Nawaz, already slated to join the 17-member T20I squad set to clash against New Zealand from January 12, will now expedite his departure to join the national squad currently battling it out in Australia.
Chief Selector Wahab Riaz expressed regret over Noman Ali’s unavailability, citing logistical challenges, including visa procedures for a new player, and the imperative need for a left-arm spinner in the squad, making Nawaz the most viable alternative for the team.
Regarding the prospect of Abrar Ahmed’s return, the team management remains optimistic about his availability for the third Test match set to unfold at the Sydney Cricket Ground, commencing from January 3, 2024. They are hopeful that Ahmed’s recovery will pave the way for his inclusion in the squad.
