In an enthralling showdown at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown, New Zealand Women secured a dominant 131-run win against Pakistan Women in the first One-Day International (ODI) of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25.
The clash saw a remarkable display of skill and resilience from both teams. New Zealand Women, after electing to bat first, delivered a commanding performance, posting a formidable total of 365 runs for the loss of four wickets in their stipulated 50 overs.
The hosts’ opening pair, Suzie Bates and Bernadine Bezuidenhout, set the stage ablaze with a stellar 165-run partnership. Bates showcased her batting prowess, notching up an impressive century—her 13th in the format—while accumulating 108 runs from 104 deliveries.
Following the early departure of Bezuidenhout, Amelia Kerr and Bates continued the onslaught, contributing significant runs to the scoreboard. Kerr’s resilient 83 runs and captain Sophie Devine’s explosive 70, supported by a quick-fire 107-run partnership, bolstered New Zealand’s imposing total.
In response, Pakistan Women commenced their chase with promise, thanks to a solid 110-run opening partnership between Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin. Despite Amin’s valiant century—her fourth in ODIs—scoring 105 from 117 balls, Pakistan Women fell short, bowled out for 234 runs in 49.5 overs.
Ali’s determined 44 provided a strong foundation, but the team faced setbacks with the fall of crucial wickets, and no significant partnerships followed Amin’s departure. Amelia Kerr starred with the ball for the hosts, claiming three wickets for 44 runs, effectively denting Pakistan’s pursuit.
Despite Amin’s exceptional effort, New Zealand Women emerged victorious, clinching the first ODI and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Suzie Bates’ remarkable all-around performance earned her the Player of the Match accolade.
The two sides will continue their battle in the next two ODIs scheduled at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on 15 and 18 December, respectively, promising more thrilling cricketing action in the ongoing ICC Women’s Championship.
