Pakistan showcased resilience on the second day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after their bowling unit dismissed Australia for 318. The day saw a commanding partnership between Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood, who steered Pakistan to 194-6, trailing by 124 runs.
Australia began the day at 187-3, with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head at the crease. Shaheen Shah Afridi struck early, removing Head, followed by Aamir Jamal’s crucial wicket of Labuschagne. Mitchell Marsh contributed 41, but Pakistan’s varied attack caused regular fall of wickets.
Pakistan’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Aamir Jamal leading with three wickets. Australia’s innings ended at 318, with Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mir Hamza, and Salman Ali Agha also contributing.
Pakistan’s response saw a cautious start from Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique before Lyon dismissed Imam. Shafique’s half-century and Shan Masood’s 54 formed a vital partnership of 90 runs. However, Cummins claimed crucial wickets of Shafique and Babar Azam in quick succession.
The innings faltered further, but Rizwan and Aamir steadied the ship. Despite losing six wickets, Pakistan ended the day at 194-6. Cummins stood out with three wickets for Australia.
Day three promises an intriguing continuation at MCG, with Pakistan aiming to close the gap on Australia’s first-innings lead.
