Pakistani actor Mira Sethi, currently starring in the drama serial ‘Kuch Ankahi,’ has revealed that the show is garnering widespread praise and an “amazing” response from neighboring India. The drama, which delves into progressive themes, has captivated audiences in both Pakistan and India with its exploration of minority rights, women empowerment, mental health, and gender stereotypes.
‘Kuch Ankahi’ premiered in January of this year and, after twenty-two episodes, has made a significant impact, not only in Pakistan but also across the border in India. Mira Sethi, in an Instagram live session with Arab News, shared that she receives numerous messages from people in India expressing their love for the show and appreciating the progressive narrative coming from Pakistan.
The surge in social and video-sharing platforms, particularly YouTube, has played a crucial role in enabling Pakistani dramas to cater to audiences worldwide. Mira Sethi, who is also an author of a collection of original stories challenging traditional notions of identity and family, titled ‘Are You Enjoying?,’ highlighted the power of the small screen. She stated that for every person who has read her book, 10,000 people have watched her shows, emphasizing that we are currently living in the golden age of TV.
The actress further emphasized the global reach of Pakistani dramas, mentioning audiences in India, Bangladesh, the United States, and the United Kingdom. With the influence of social media and YouTube, Pakistani dramas can bypass traditional distribution channels and cater to viewers across South Asia.
Mira Sethi expressed the need to portray fully formed human characters in Pakistani dramas, moving away from depicting women as entirely weak or strong. She dismissed the notion that audiences do not want to watch progressive dramas like ‘Kuch Ankahi,’ stating that quality content will always find its audience. While the show may have been a slow burner initially, it eventually struck a chord with viewers.
‘Kuch Ankahi’ revolves around a middle-class family with three daughters, each striving to break free from the societal constraints imposed by their mother. Mira Sethi portrays the character of Samiya, the eldest daughter, who is calm and composed but always scheming. In real life, Sethi revealed that she is not as “quiet” as her character but resonates with Samiya’s foresight.
As the drama approaches its conclusion, with only three episodes remaining, Sethi hinted at a surprising transition in Samiya’s character that will captivate the audience. She credited the writer of the drama, Syed Mohammad Ahmed, who also portrays the father of the three sisters, for infusing the narrative with nuance.
‘Kuch Ankahi’ serves as a testament to the power of Pakistani dramas to transcend borders, connect with audiences globally, and contribute to progressive storytelling that resonates with viewers from diverse backgrounds.
