Pakistan’s Bowlers Shine as Australia Holds Sway on Day Three

The third day at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed a gripping display of bowling prowess by Pakistan, yet the Australian side remained in control at stumps, leading by 241 runs.

Resuming from their overnight score of 194-6, Pakistan’s lower order aimed to add valuable runs to their total. The Rizwan-Jamal partnership contributed 45 runs, but Pat Cummins’ early breakthrough disrupted Pakistan’s plans. Cummins bagged a fifer, ensuring a swift end to Pakistan’s innings at 264.

Pakistan’s left-arm duo, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mir Hamza, spearheaded the bowling attack with sheer brilliance. In an explosive display, they dismantled the Australian top order, claiming three wickets each. Shaheen made an immediate impact, dismissing the dangerous Khawaja and Labuschagne early on.

Hamza’s fiery spell during and after lunch dented Australia’s top order further, securing the vital wickets of Warner and Head in consecutive deliveries. However, a resilient partnership between Smith and Marsh steadied the ship for Australia, building a commendable 153-run stand.

Pakistan’s breakthrough came through Hamza, as Salman caught Marsh short of a century. His crucial 96 off 130 balls proved pivotal in Australia’s innings. Later, Shaheen’s strategic plan led to Smith’s departure at 50, closing the day’s play.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Carey stood strong, finishing the day unbeaten on 16 as Australia concluded Day Three at 187-6 in 62.3 overs, holding a significant 241-run lead.

Scores in Brief: Australia: 318 & 187-6 (Mitchell Marsh 96, Steven Smith 50; Mir Hamza 3-27, Shaheen Shah Afridi 3-58)
Pakistan: 264 (Abdullah Shafique 62, Shan Masood 54, Mohammad Rizwan 42; Pat Cummins 5-48, Nathan Lyon 4-73)
