The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the appointment of Sumair Ahmad Syed as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO) following approval by the Board of Governors during its 75th meeting at the National Cricket Academy. The meeting, chaired by Mohsin Naqvi, marks a pivotal shift in the PCB’s leadership team as it gears up for new challenges and opportunities in Pakistan cricket.
Sumair Ahmad, a seasoned civil servant with extensive administrative experience, joins the PCB after serving as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. He succeeds Salman Naseer, who has been named Advisor to the PCB Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) department. Salman’s five-year term as COO concludes in February 2025, after which he had previously expressed his intention to not renew the role.
Leadership Vision
Welcoming Sumair Ahmad and acknowledging Salman Naseer’s contributions, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi shared his optimism for the Board’s future.
“Sumair is an outstanding professional with proven administrative skills and deep industry knowledge. We are delighted to welcome him to the PCB family and are confident that under his leadership, we will continue to strengthen and improve our administrative structures, moving closer to our goal of becoming a model, high-performing organisation,” Naqvi said.
Reflecting on Salman Naseer’s tenure, Naqvi expressed gratitude for his exemplary service:
“Salman has been an exemplary leader at the Pakistan Cricket Board, making invaluable contributions during his tenure as the Chief Operating Officer. His experience and insights have made him an asset to the PCB. With our plans to establish PSL as an independent entity and expand the league with two additional teams in 2026, his appointment as PSL’s Chief Executive Officer ensures we benefit from his expertise as we move forward.”
Sumair Ahmad’s Commitment
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Sumair Ahmad shared his vision for Pakistan cricket:
“As a lifelong follower and supporter of Pakistan cricket, it is a profound honour for me to join this dynamic organisation as its Chief Operating Officer during these exciting and pivotal times. I am deeply grateful to the PCB Chairman and the Board of Governors for their trust and support.
“This organisation holds tremendous potential, and cricket serves as a unifying force for the people of Pakistan. During my tenure, I am committed to helping the Chairman bring his vision for Pakistan cricket to life—centered on national team success, enhancing infrastructure, expanding opportunities for aspiring cricketers, and ensuring good governance.”
Salman Naseer’s Reflections
Stepping into his new role, Salman Naseer reflected on his journey as COO and pledged support for Sumair Ahmad:
“It has been an honour and a privilege to lead the PCB’s management team as Chief Operating Officer. This journey has been deeply rewarding, as we collectively made significant progress and overcame various challenges.”
Naseer also highlighted his confidence in Sumair’s leadership:
“With the experience and commitment he brings, I am confident that the PCB will continue to grow stronger and reach new heights.”
The PCB’s leadership changes come as the organisation focuses on its long-term goals, including the growth of the PSL and preparations for major cricketing events. Both leaders’ roles will be critical in shaping the future of cricket in Pakistan.
