PCB Chairman Approves Major Overhaul for Domestic Cricket With Focus on Talent and Merit

Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, led a pivotal meeting at the National Cricket Academy to address and improve the quality of domestic cricket in Pakistan. The three-hour-long session was aimed at devising strategies to fortify the domestic cricket framework and promote excellence at every level.

In attendance were COO PCB Salman Naseer, CFO PCB Javed Murtaza, and directors of International Cricket, High Performance Centers, Domestic Cricket, PSL, Commercial, alongside other relevant PCB officials. The meeting resulted in the principled approval of a comprehensive plan to elevate domestic cricket standards.

Chairman Naqvi emphasized the importance of organizing consistent tournaments from the club level up to the national stage. He stressed that budding players must be professionally groomed and trained by top-notch coaches to refine their skills. The criteria for player advancement will hinge on performance, fitness, and merit.

Key decisions included enhancing the quality of coaching for the upcoming domestic cricket season and reviewing domestic contracts. A master coach will be appointed to train domestic cricket coaches, ensuring they are equipped to nurture new talent effectively. It was also resolved that participation in domestic tournaments will be mandatory for national team selection, with a strict adherence to performance and fitness benchmarks.

The meeting underscored a zero-tolerance policy towards compromises on merit, performance, and fitness. Plans were laid out to hold tournaments across all three formats of the game for the 2024-25 season, aiming to foster quality domestic cricket. Chairman Naqvi highlighted the urgent need to discover and develop new talent at the grassroots level, advocating for significant investment in this area to yield positive outcomes for Pakistani cricket.

Participants also reviewed domestic cricket structures from various high-performing cricket nations, seeking insights and best practices to apply within Pakistan’s domestic framework.

The collective agreement from the meeting sets a clear pathway for advancing domestic cricket, with the PCB committed to creating a robust, merit-based system that nurtures talent and enhances the overall standard of cricket in the country.
