In a series of pivotal meetings at the cricket headquarters in Lahore, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced significant changes to the domestic cricket structure and plans for the expansion of the PSL. The discussions focused on enhancing the competitiveness and quality of cricket in Pakistan, with several key decisions made to shape the future of the sport in the country.
Revamping Domestic Cricket
Chairman Mohsin Naqvi directed the domestic cricket department to design a competitive schedule for the 2024-25 season aimed at closing the gap with international cricket. Emphasizing the need for more playing and earning opportunities for domestic players, Naqvi highlighted plans to introduce additional T20, 50-over, and four-day events.
“I want professional cricketers to be engaged throughout the year so they can continue to improve and are also in their best shape when required for national duty,” Naqvi stated. He noted that a robust domestic cricket structure would increase the player pool, ultimately benefiting the Pakistan national team.
The 2024-25 domestic cricket season is set to kick off in September.
Strengthening the PSL
During the PSL Governing Council meeting, Naqvi reassured franchise owners of his full support, emphasizing their vital role in the league’s success. “I would like to see you grow and flourish as franchise owners. I will support you wherever I can to help you achieve your objectives,” he said.
Franchise owners echoed this sentiment, underscoring their commitment to the league’s growth. “PSL is a jewel in the crown of Pakistan cricket, and with the PCB’s support, we want to see it continue to make upward progress,” they stated.
PSL Expansion and Future Plans
The meeting also covered the expansion of the PSL from six to eight teams starting in 2026, with further discussions slated for next month. The PCB proposed a window from April 7 to May 20 for PSL 2025, with additional talks to follow.
These strategic decisions underscore the PCB’s commitment to elevating domestic cricket and ensuring the continued success and global stature of the PSL.
