Rain Disrupts Play as Pakistan Keep Australia in Check at MCG

The anticipated Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground between Pakistan and Australia saw rain interruptions on the opening day. Pakistan, electing to field first after winning the toss, showcased their bowling prowess, thwarting Australia’s batting lineup to 187-3 before rain halted play.

Pakistan’s pacers began impressively, with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mir Hamza seeking early wickets. However, David Warner and Usman Khawaja formed a formidable opening partnership, setting a solid foundation with a 90-run stand. Warner’s escape, after an early chance put down by Abdullah Shafique, saw him make 38 runs before Salman Ali Agha claimed his wicket just before lunch.

Returning to the Test side, Hasan Ali made an immediate impact, dismissing Khawaja for 42, curbing Australia’s momentum. Despite overcast conditions favoring the seamers, rain interrupted play, leading to an early tea break with Australia at 114-2.

Resuming after the break, the Pakistani bowlers persisted, with Aamir Jamal breaking the steady partnership between Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, sending Smith back to the pavilion for 26. At stumps, Australia stood at 187-3, with Labuschagne unbeaten on 44 and Travis Head on nine not out.

The interruption due to rain curtailed the day’s play, leaving Australia well-placed but stifled by Pakistan’s disciplined bowling performance. The match is set to resume on day two, with Labuschagne and Head aiming to strengthen Australia’s position further.

Scores in Brief:
Australia 187-3 in 66 overs (Marnus Labuschagne 44 not out, Usman Khawaja 42, David Warner 38; Salman Ali Agha 1-5, Hasan Ali 1-28, Aamir Jamal 1-47)
