Test fast bowler Mohammad Ali is no stranger to the challenges of making a comeback to the national team. Having seen the highs and lows of life, he understands that returning to the team requires starting anew and consistently performing to secure a place. But for Ali, these challenges are not daunting—they are part of a journey he has navigated before.
Ali, who played two Test matches against England two years ago, has now been named in Pakistan’s Test squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. Before donning the national colors again, he will first feature in the four-day match against Bangladesh A.
In a recent interview, Ali reflected on his journey, stating that being dropped from the team was a humbling experience that he accepted with the realization that perhaps he wasn’t ready for the big stage at that time. “Maybe I wasn’t ready for that stage, and that’s why I didn’t perform well,” Ali said. Following this setback, he focused on domestic cricket, where his performances paved the way for his return to the national squad. “This opportunity is a result of that hard work, and there could be nothing more gratifying.”
Last month, Ali showcased his bowling prowess by taking six wickets in a four-day match against Bangladesh A in Darwin, playing for Pakistan Shaheens. He shared that despite bowling well, he didn’t take wickets in the first match’s both innings and the first innings of the second match. However, he remained confident about making an impact in the second innings. When fellow bowler Kashif Ali was ruled out due to injury, Ali stepped up, taking on additional responsibility by bowling long spells—a challenge he was well-prepared for. He credited the coaches for their unwavering support throughout the tour.
Ali also expressed his gratitude to his coach and mentor, Mansoor Amjad, who has been instrumental in guiding him, refining his bowling action, and helping him improve various aspects of his game.
For aspiring cricketers, Ali offers valuable advice: “Alongside cricket, pay full attention to your education. It will benefit you not only during your cricketing career but also after it.” His words reflect the wisdom of someone who has walked a challenging path and emerged stronger, ready to take on the world stage once again.
As Mohammad Ali prepares to make his Test comeback, his story of perseverance and dedication serves as an inspiration to young cricketers and a reminder that setbacks are just stepping stones on the road to success.
