“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”
(Sir John Dalberg)
This famous phrase encapsulates the message of Muqaddar’s eight-episode. Sardar Saif (Faisal Qureshi), on the basis of his power, both financial and political, is forcing people to do things to which they would prefer suicide. The episode presents the idea of how one person’s obsession can damage not only others but his or her own family as well.
The episode begins with an oblivious Saad (Haroon Shahid) pleading with his uncle (Sardar Saif) to help him recover his university friend Raima (Madiha Imam) from a kidnapping. Saad, who is also soon to be Sardar Sahab’s son in law, is entirely unaware of what is going on behind his back. In fact, his insistence is viewed with suspicion, especially from Sardar Sahab’s wife played by (Ayesha Gul). Sardar Saif plants this seed, and then his wife warns Saad to keep in mind that he is promised to her daughter and shouldn’t get too involved with Raima’s case.
On the other hand, Sardar’s daughter isn’t too happy with Saad, either. She goes on a date, where her boyfriend glowingly narrates flowery lines for her. Later she is seen exploring the idea of dumping an ungrateful Saad. This looks to be a pivotal scene as we might see her other relationship grow further and cause havoc at her home.
Guardians of Raima, played by Fazila Qazi and Saif-e-Hassan, are helpless in front of the powerful Sardar. They also try to continually try and keep their son Ali Ansari in check from doing something dangerous. It is all very depressing.
But this episode was really about Raima’s struggle. She is kidnapped and is being told that she will be married later that day. She begs for help, but the servants at the house, although understanding her plight, are afraid of the consequences of going against the will of Sardar Sahab. When all is lost, Raima tries to kill herself but gets away without much harm. Sardar Saif throws one last card and shows her a video of Haris being beaten black and blue by his men. She caves, and they get married. However, she still declares her love for Haris, which enrages Sardar Saif.
This is where the episode ends at a tantalizing point. Faisal Qureshi is doing a tremendous job as a remorseless and brutal man. Madiya Imam is also impressive as she runs out of choices and has to do the unthinkable. Directed by Shehrazade Sheikh, this 7th Sky Productions drama is moving at a fast pace now. Things are close to a breaking point. We sure can’t wait for the next episode.
