Saqlain Mushtaq Appointed as Spin Bowling Coach for Multan Sultans

Multan Sultans fans have reason to celebrate as legendary Pakistani spinner and former head coach of the men’s national team, Saqlain Mushtaq, is set to assume the position of Spin Bowling Coach for the Multan Sultans in preparation for the 9th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Saqlain Mushtaq, renowned for his pioneering role in the art of spin bowling, particularly for perfecting the “doosra,” had a remarkable career representing Pakistan. As a player, he consistently outwitted opponents with his crafty spin bowling skills.

In his coaching role, Saqlain Mushtaq has continued to be a trailblazer in the field of spin bowling. He has previously held various coaching positions with international and domestic squads in England, West Indies, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Australia, and, most notably, coached the England cricket team to victory in the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup in 2019 as the spin bowling coach.

Saqlain Mushtaq will be joined by Alex Hartley, who has been appointed as the Assistant Spin Bowling Coach. Alex, a former England international player who played a pivotal role in England’s victory at the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, has extensive experience in coaching at the county level. She will be under the mentorship of Saqlain Mushtaq, offering her valuable insights as a left-arm orthodox spin bowler.

Multan Sultans CEO Ali Khan Tareen expressed his excitement about the new coaching appointments, saying, “Alongside player development, working with top Pakistani coaching talent, alongside strong global coaches, is a top priority for Multan Sultans. Having a coach of Saqlain Mushtaq’s stature join us at Multan Sultans is exciting for the franchise. His coaching expertise has been transformational wherever he has worked, and we eagerly anticipate witnessing his collaboration with our players and the broader coaching team. We are equally pleased to welcome Alex Hartley as assistant spin bowling coach – she will be a great asset to the team.”

Saqlain Mushtaq expressed his honor at joining the Multan Sultans, stating, “I am honored to be a part of Multan Sultans, joining such a great lineup of coaching staff. I am excited to work with the players, our youngsters, and to nurture their talent as a team mentor.”

Alex Hartley, on joining the Multan Sultans, emphasized the significance of her appointment, saying, “It’s a privilege to be on board. As a former women’s international, to be recognized and given the chance to work in the men’s game speaks volumes for the progress of women’s cricket. It’s also a demonstration of the forward-thinking leadership at MS.”

Saqlain Mushtaq and Alex Hartley will be working alongside head coach Abdul Rehman and fast bowling coach Catherine Dalton, forming a dynamic coaching team for the Multan Sultans as they prepare for the upcoming PSL season. This coaching lineup promises to bring a wealth of experience and expertise to nurture and develop the skills of the team’s spin bowlers.
