Shahid Afridi has decided to step down as the captain of Pakistan Cricket team for the T20 International format, however, he is not retiring from the T20 International cricket. This decision has come as the follow up of Pakistan’s failing to qualify for the Semi Finals of from the World T20 2016, and poor performance in Asia Cup T20 2016.

In a media statement given by former captain Shahid Afidi said:

“Today I wish to inform my fans in Pakistan and all over the world that I am relinquishing the captaincy of the T20 Pakistan team of my own volition. I would also like to inform that God willing I aim to continue playing the game for my country and league cricket etc. I also wish my fans to keep praying and supporting me as long as I play for Pakistan or for any other league team all over the world”

36 years old star all-rounder, Afridi was severely criticized as a captain following Pakistan’s poor performances in the Asia Cup and the ICC World T20. Pakistan could only win three matches in eight games in these two tournaments.

Shahid Afridi became captain after Mohammad Hafeez resigned from the captaincy in 2014 after World T20 2014. Under the captaincy of Shahid Afridi Pakistan won 11 out of 24 matches since 2014, overall he captained Pakistan in 43 T20 Internationals, winning 19 out of these matches and losing 23.
