Sri Lanka Cricket Offers to Host Asia Cup 2023 Amid Uncertainty

In a bid to salvage the future of the Asia Cup 2023, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has stepped forward as a potential host, even at short notice, if the tournament cannot be held in Pakistan. The hosting rights for the tournament were awarded to Pakistan by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), but India’s refusal to tour their neighboring country has cast doubts on the event.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is determined to ensure that the Asia Cup takes place at a neutral venue. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reluctant to host the event outside Pakistan, as it would impact their ongoing efforts to bring international cricket back to the country.

The PCB had proposed a hybrid model, which involved holding four group stage matches in Pakistan and the remaining matches at a neutral venue. However, the BCCI is unlikely to accept this proposal.

A top official from the SLC stated, “The SLC is prepared to host the Asia Cup at short notice. The final decision now lies with the ACC,” as reported by Cricbuzz.

Najam Sethi, chairman of the PCB Management Committee, emphasized the need for a rational approach to resolve the brewing crisis that jeopardizes the successful hosting of the Asia Cup and Pakistan’s participation in the ODI World Cup later this year.

Speaking to the media during the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) meeting, Sethi expressed concerns about the Pakistan team’s chances of traveling to India for the World Cup. He stated, “If India refuses to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, it is likely that the Pakistan government will not permit our team to cross the borders for the World Cup. Cricket will ultimately suffer in such a scenario.”

Sethi further urged for finding a middle ground to resolve the issues that pose a threat to the smooth hosting of ICC and ACC events. He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue to reach a solution that satisfies all parties involved.

With the SLC offering to host the Asia Cup and ongoing discussions among cricketing boards, the fate of the tournament hangs in the balance. Cricket enthusiasts around the globe eagerly await a resolution to ensure the continuation of this prestigious tournament and the successful participation of all teams involved.
