Three Pakistani-Origin Umpires Set to Officiate in WBBL Matches

Cricket Australia recently unveiled its State and Territory Umpire Panels (STUP) for the 2023/24 season, and the list features a diverse group of umpires, including three officials of Pakistani origin. Syed Humayun, Ahmad Khan, and Muhammad Qureshi are all set to play pivotal roles in Australian cricket, officiating in various high-profile matches.

The State and Territory Umpire Panels consist of 35 members for the upcoming season, with these three umpires proudly representing the Pakistani diaspora in Australia. In addition to their Premier Cricket commitments, these panel members will be appointed to oversee various CA competitions, including the Women’s Big Bash League, Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), Toyota Second XI, CA Underage National Championships, and as Fourth Umpires in the Bash League.

The inclusion of these umpires is a testament to the diverse and inclusive nature of cricket in Australia. It showcases the opportunities available to individuals from different backgrounds to contribute to the game.

Syed Humayun and Muhammad Qureshi hail from Pakistan, while Ahmad Khan is also of Pakistani origin. They will join four members from India and one with Sri Lankan family heritage in the CA Umpires panel for the 2023/24 season.

The State and Territory Umpire Panels now boast a total of eight South Asian members, emphasizing the multicultural aspect of cricket in Australia:

  2. Syed Humayun (Pakistan)
  3. Sharad Patel (India)
  4. Daval Bhatt (India)
  5. Harsimran Singh (India)
  6. Muhammad Qureshi (Pakistan)

  8. Ahmad Khan (Pakistan)

In a significant move towards gender diversity, six women have also been included in the panel. Claire Polosak, Eloise Sheridan, Clare Haysom, Lisa McCabe, Ashlee Gibbons, and Kate Holloman will contribute to the growth and development of cricket officiating.
