Leg-spinner Usama Mir has emerged as the only Pakistani cricketer to be picked for the upcoming season of Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), following the conclusion of the BBL and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) drafts. Despite the availability of 69 male and 11 female Pakistani players, Usama was the sole selection, highlighting the challenges faced by Pakistani cricketers in securing spots in international leagues.
Usama Mir, who has previously played for the Melbourne Stars, was picked by the same franchise in the third round of the BBL drafts. His prior experience and performance in the 2023-24 season likely contributed to his selection. The BBL, scheduled to take place from December 15, 2024, to January 27, 2025, has shown a preference for foreign players who can commit to the entire season without complications related to No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
The limited participation of Pakistani players in the BBL reflects the ongoing challenges they face due to national team commitments and the uncertainty surrounding the issuance of NOCs. These factors often make it difficult for franchises to secure Pakistani talent for the full duration of the league.
In contrast to the single Pakistani selection, the BBL draft saw several prominent international players being picked, including Ben Duckett, James Vince, and Lockie Ferguson, among others. The league’s focus remains on assembling squads that can perform consistently throughout the season, with minimal disruptions.
Usama Mir’s inclusion in the Melbourne Stars squad will be closely watched, as he represents Pakistan in one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world.
