A battle of resilience and sheer will unfolded at the SBP Sports Complex as State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) orchestrated a thrilling four-wicket victory over Higher Education Commission (HEC) in President’s Trophy Grade-I. The match, filled with twists and turns, saw a stellar performance from Usman Salahuddin, who anchored the chase with an unwavering 97, while Aftab Khan’s fiery five-wicket haul set the tone for SBP’s dominance.
Aftab Khan’s Spell Sets the Stage
The contest began with a ruthless bowling display from SBP’s Aftab Khan, whose blistering 5-24 dismantled HEC for a mere 126 in 40 overs. Amid the chaos, Ali Hamza Wasim stood defiant, crafting a fighting unbeaten 57 off 100 balls, laced with six boundaries. However, SBP’s reply wasn’t as smooth as they would have hoped, as Waseem Akram Jnr led HEC’s resurgence, scalping 4-43 to leave SBP in trouble at 109-7 by stumps on day one.
Abdullah Fazal’s Masterclass Gives HEC an Edge
With a slender 29-run lead, SBP looked to press on, but HEC’s openers launched a counterattack. Abdullah Fazal exhibited immense patience and class, compiling a 192-ball 95, striking 14 fours. His opening partner, Mohammad Mohsin Khan, played a fluent knock of 61 from 91 balls, ensuring HEC stretched their lead. Despite their efforts, SBP bowlers, led by Mohammad Ismail (5-97) and Rameez Aziz (3-41), prevented a complete runaway, restricting HEC to 321 all out.
SBP’s Chase and Salahuddin’s Heroics
Set a challenging 293 for victory, SBP’s second innings was built around Usman Salahuddin’s remarkable 257-ball 97, where he showcased the virtues of patience and temperament. Partnering with Ali Shan (60) and veteran Test batter Fawad Alam (52), Usman steered his side through moments of pressure. His near-century knock, though falling three short, embodied the spirit of SBP’s fight.
Despite Waseem Akram Jnr’s tireless efforts, taking two wickets to complete a seven-wicket match haul, SBP methodically chipped away at the target. As the final runs were scored in the 100th over, SBP celebrated a hard-fought victory, proving that composure under pressure remains the key to success in long-format cricket.
This clash was not just about numbers; it was a spectacle of grit, passion, and strategic brilliance. From Aftab Khan’s early rampage to Usman Salahuddin’s defining innings, SBP’s triumph will be remembered as a testament to perseverance and determination.
