Shaharyar Khan, a distinguished diplomat and former chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), breathed his last early on Saturday in Lahore at the age of 89. His passing marks the end of an era characterized by remarkable service to both diplomacy and cricket.
The Foreign Office paid tribute to Khan’s illustrious career spanning from 1957 to 1994, during which he held various prestigious roles including foreign secretary, ambassador, and high commissioner. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed Khan’s diplomatic prowess, acknowledging his pivotal role in enhancing Pakistan’s relations with other nations.
As a diplomat, Khan served with excellence as the ambassador to Jordan, UK, and France, leaving an indelible mark on Pakistan’s foreign policy landscape. His appointment as the UN secretary-general’s special representative in Rwanda in 1994 underscored his commitment to international peace and diplomacy.
In addition to his diplomatic endeavors, Khan made significant contributions to Pakistani cricket. He served as the chairman of the PCB for two terms, from December 2003 to October 2006 and from August 2014 to August 2017. During his tenure, Khan played a vital role in the resurgence of cricket in Pakistan and worked tirelessly for the growth and development of the sport in the country.
Expressing deep sadness over Khan’s demise, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi praised his administrative acumen and unwavering dedication to Pakistan cricket. Khan’s tenure as chairman witnessed pivotal moments in Pakistani cricket history, including the successful revival of international cricket in Pakistan.
Renowned academic and policy expert Dr. Adil Najam remembered Khan as a “wonderfully warm and affectionate human being” who made invaluable contributions to Pakistan across various domains. Similarly, senior Indian politician Shashi Tharoor mourned Khan’s death, highlighting his role as a scion of the Bhopal royal family and a passionate advocate for good relations between India and Pakistan.
