Rishtay Biktay Hain highlights the evil ‘Dowry’ a curse that is choking our society. It addresses the plight of girls who are supposed to look, behave and walk a certain way in order to bag a good Rishta (proposal) for themselves. They are treated as props by their own parents in order to impress their in-laws. Moreover, parents are harassed and forced to pay dowry. In order to get rid of the notion ‘Log Kya Kahein Gein’ (what people will say) they invest their entire savings to prepare the best dowry in order to cement their daughter’s position.
For the unversed, Rishtay Biktay Hain follows the story of a young protagonist Zeba (Zubab Rana) who becomes a victim of greed and selfishness. She plays a simple and sweet daughter to Khalda (Rubina Ashraf) and Sharafat (Muhammad Ahmed). Khalda has been very supportive towards her widow sister Farhat (Shagufta Ejaz). She is mother to three sons Affan (Ali Abbas) Hammad (Asad Siddique) and Babar (Arsalan Faisal). Unlike Khalda, Farhat is well versed with the art of manipulating people and making U-turns in life for her own benefits and greediness. She dreams of being rich; wants to
change her status. With mutual consent by the elders Zeba gets engaged to Affan. Later on, Affan comes across Shehryar (Javed Sheikh) for some work; the latter is impressed with his dedication towards his work and wants him to marry his spoilt daughter Hania (Saniya Shamshad). In order to earn more money and upgrade his lifestyle, Affan chooses Hania over Zeba. Adding more to the horror Zeba is forced to marry his younger brother Hammad, who possesses a carefree attitude and is good for nothing.
Analyzing the performances, Zubab Rana’s act undoubtedly towers over everyone. The talented actress is raising the bar and winning hearts. It’s hard to take your eyes off her, who captures the nuances of her character spot-on. She’s stellar, in terrific form, immersing herself in this character. She’s simply outstanding and doesn’t miss a single beat. The earnestness and sincerity she invests in her performance is for all to see. In the emotional and breakdown sequences, she shines. She fills even her silent scenes with powerful emotions. One has to applaud this girl for making all the right choices every time. Post Mere Khudaya and Bandish, Rishtay Biktay Hain is another medal that shines the brightest when you look at her body of work. Her confidence at such an early phase of her career is infectious and her overall performance deserves an ovation.
Getting an emotional response from audiences is no easy task, but Zubab Rana manages to pull of her role with perfection, making the audience completely intrigued with her character.
Will Zeba forget Affan and accept Hammad as her husband? We’d have to wait to find out!
